Shannon has since called out the trolls on Twitter...

It goes without saying that Riverdale fans are passionate af. Ever since the teen drama first aired back in 2017, viewers have become obsessed with every aspect of it. From the incredible ships (Falice and Choni are perfection and we won't hear any arguments against them) to the wild storylines (why is Archie in juvie?), there's nothing quite like it. However, some people can get a little bit too invested in it.

In last night's episode there was a major plot twist in which Shannon Purser's character Ethel kissed Jughead. Say what?!!! No we are not joking. Jughead played Griffins and Gargoyles with Ethel in a bid to find out more about it and, as part of the game, it was 'necessary' for him to kiss Ethel. Yep, that happened and as soon as the moment aired, some Bughead fans have gone onto Twitter to insult Shannon - and she's clapped back.

People have been calling Shannon insulting terms like 'fat' and 'ugly' and it goes without saying that this is not okay. Taking to Twitter, the Sierra Burgess Is a Loser star tweeted: "all the stans who finally feel comfortable calling me fat/ugly now that Ethel has interfered with their ship" alongside an image of the out of breath Spongebob meme. We stan a legend who will not take any bullshit lightly.

She then went on to add: "I’m not stressed about it, trust me. I just wonder what these people will think in like 10 yrs when they remember their twitter and realize they insulted and attacked real human beings for their character on a tv show..." In other words, Shannon just effortlessly read toxic fandoms. It bears repeating that Riverdale is a just tv show and fans need to reconsider their behaviour when it comes to the actors portraying characters.

Thankfully people have immediately rallied behind Shannon on Twitter to show their support. Just one look at the replies to Shannon's tweets and there's nothing but love. One said: "Seriously?? What is wrong with people?? Girl, you are beautiful and strong and inspiring." and another added: "i love you so much, don’t listen to those assholes".

Cole Sprouse (Jughead) and Lili Reinhart (Betty) are yet to publicly address the incident but of course, we'll let you know if they do.
